| biography:
| Writer, born in Deptford, Devon, SW England, UK. He joined the Indian Educational Service in 1903, becoming principal of the Elphinstone High School, Mumbai (Bombay), in 1915. He published textbooks and a guide to the theory and practice of education, and over 30 novels, notably Beau Geste (1924) and Beau Sabreur (1926). Many of his novels are based on adventures of the French Foreign Legion, which he did not discourage readers from erroneously believing he had joined. |
