| King of Mercia (c.632–55). He established mastery over the English Midlands, and was frequently at war with the kings of Northumbria. His forces defeated and killed Edwin at Hatfield in Yorkshire (633), and also Edwin's successor, Oswald, when he invaded Penda's territories (642); but Penda was himself slain in battle near Leeds while campaigning against Oswald's successor, Oswiu. |
