| biography:
| Jurist and politician, born in Carrara, Tuscany, NW Italy. He lectured in criminal law at Bologna University, then after 1815 went into exile in Switzerland and lectured first in Geneva and then in Paris. Appointed French ambassador to the Papal States in 1845, he used his influence on Pope Pius IX to convince him to implement reforms to modernize the state. |
