| biography:
| French diplomat and mystic, born in Paris, France. He became a Capuchin monk in 1599, and Cardinal Richelieu's secretary in 1611. His nickname derives from his contact with Richelieu (the ‘Red Eminence’), for whom he went on several important diplomatic missions, especially during the Thirty Years' War. |
