| Architect, born in Spain. He was a disciple of Ardemans, whom he replaced in 1726 as senior master craftsman of the Madrid Town Hall. His style tended towards the simplification of forms, brought together discontinuously. The decoration of his works is characterized by the use of Gothic elements (windows with lancet arches in the facades) and Doric entablatures, which anticipated the later Neoclassical. Within the simplification that characterizes his style, there is a short period (c.1730) during which his works appear with unbalanced decoration. In Madrid he completed the Virgen del Puerto (1718), the Toledo Bridge over the Manzanares (1718–21), and the Church of Monserrat (1720). Under the direction of Alberto Churriguera, and together with José Barcia, he completed the tower of the New Cathedral of Salamanca (1733–8). |
