| biography:
| Spanish writer, the author of the Libro del Passo honroso defendido por el excelente cauallero Suero de Quiñones, abridged for publication by Juan de Pineda (Salamanca, 1588). The work is an eye-witness account of events also related in the Anales of Zurita and in the Crónica de Juan II concerning a challenge made by Suero de Quiñones, who vowed to defend the bridge of San Marcos de Órbigo, near León, with nine friends for a whole month from 10 July 1434 against all knights travelling to the shrine at Santiago. Of the 68 contenders to cross the bridge, one - an Aragonese - was killed, and nine of the defenders, including Suero himself, were wounded in the 627 jousts. The judges proclaimed that Quiñones had won the right to remove an iron chain that he wore every Thursday around his neck as a token of bondage to his lady, this in spite of the fact that only 177 lances had been broken, whereas Suero had vowed to continue wearing the chain until the total reached 300. He himself had fought on four occasions only during the entire month. The Passo honroso is curious as a contemporary account of one of numerous bizarre adventures enacted in imitation of the libros de caballería. The Crónica de Juan II (1433) records at least five such tournaments which took place about that time. |
