| biography:
| Architect and painter, born in Toledo, C Spain. After a long stay in Italy, he worked as a painter for the Royal Chapel in Granada (c.1521; ‘Agony of Jesus in the Garden, His Seizure and His Descent into Limbo’); for the Cathedral of Jaén; and for the Order of St James in Uclés. He is noted for his ‘Virgen de la Leche’ in the Prado. As an architect, his only work was the Palace of Charles V in Granada, in which he affected ignorance of decorative plateresque exuberance, at its peak, in order to design a courtyard trabeated with proportioned columns and entablature, surprising because of its circular base, inscribed within the square determined by the facades. |
