| Poet, born in Córdoba, S Spain. He studied law, but in 1606 took orders and became a prebendary of Córdoba, and eventually chaplain to Philip III (reigned 1598–1621). His earlier sonnets, romances, and satirical verses are elegant and stylish. His later works, consisting for the most part of longer poems such as Solidades and Polifemo (both 1613), are written in an elaborate style, which his followers designated Gongorismo. |
