| biography:
| Poet and playwright, born in Toledo, C Spain. He studied in Salamanca (1582–4) and is best known for his romances artísticos, conserving the metre of the traditional ballad (eight syllables with assonanced endings in alternate lines) but with the strophic form of the quatrain. His works in this genre, such as Assi Riselo cantaba were long attributed to Góngara. His plays, known to his friend Lope de Vega, are apparently lost. |
