| Emperor of Brazil (1822–31), born in Lisbon, Portugal, the second son of John VI of Portugal (reigned 1816–26). He fled to Brazil with his parents on Napoleon's invasion, and became prince-regent of Brazil on his father's return to Portugal (1821). A liberal in outlook, he declared for Brazilian independence in 1822, and was crowned as Emperor Pedro I in 1826. The new empire did not start smoothly, and in 1831 he abdicated and withdrew to Portugal, where he had succeeded his father as Pedro IV (1826), but abdicated that throne in favour of his daughter, Maria. |
