| biography:
| Translator from the Italian, born in Burgos, NC Spain. After living in Rome 1485–90, he made a complete translation into Castilian verse of the Divina Commedia, as well as translating Latin authors. In 1496 he was archdeacon of Burgos Cathedral and from 1500 juez conservador in the royal monastery of San Salvador, Oña, a position involving protecting the rights of the monastic community. His books are La traducción de Dante de lengua toscana en verso castellano ... con otros dos tratados, uno que se dize querella de la fe, y otro aversión del mundo y conversión a Dios (1515) and Sátira dezena del Iuvenal en que reprende los vanos deseos (1519). He translated Juvenal's tenth satire as well as selections from Plutarch's Lives. |
