| biography:
| Painter, born near Valladolid, NWC Spain, the father of Alonso Berruguete. He became court painter to Ferdinand and Isabella, and visited Italy (c.1447), where he helped to decorate the palace library at Urbino. The new, Venetian-inspired feeling for light and colour, and the interest in perspective which he acquired in Italy, made him the first truly Renaissance painter in Spain. His later work can be seen in the cathedrals of Toledo and Avila. |
