| Writer, born in Guadix, S Spain. He served with distinction in the African campaign of 1859–60, and became a radical journalist. He published a war diary, travel notes, and poems, but is best known for his novels, particularly Sombrero de tres picos (1874) on which Manuel de Falla based his ballet The Three-Cornered Hat. |
