| biography:
| Film director, born in Calzada de Calatrava, Ciudad Real, SC Spain. He began producing his own films in Super-8, his first long feature in this format being Folle, folle-me Tim (1978). He went on to direct others such as Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980), in which his peculiar taste for extreme situations is evident. His most popular films include Laberinto de pasiones (1982, trans Maze of Passions), Entre tinieblas (1983), Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto? (1984), Matador (1986), Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (1988, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), which won several prizes, Atame (1989), Tacones Lejanos (1991), and Kika (1993). He now owns his own film studio, El Deseo, and gained worldwide fame following All About My Mother (1999), which earned him an Oscar for best foreign film.
