| Physicist, born in Vladivostock, SE Russia. He studied at the universities of Edinburgh and Moscow, taught at Moscow State University (1924–34), then moved to the Physics Institute of the Academy of Sciences. He shared the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work explaining the Čerenkov effect, now used in subatomic particle detectors. |
