| Priest and historian, probably born in Braga, N Portugal (formerly Spain). He visited Augustine in 415, and went to study under Jerome at Bethlehem. He was the author of the first Christian history of the world, Historiarum adversus Paganos, from the Creation to 417, a favourite textbook during the Middle Ages. It was translated into Anglo-Saxon by King Alfred. |
