| biography:
| Philosopher and educator, born in Recife, Brazil. After a short-lived career as a lawyer, he turned to teaching and became the first director of the Department of Cultural Extension at Recife University (1961–4). Regarded as a socialist pedagogue, following the military coup of 1964 he was briefly jailed and then exiled. In Geneva he was appointed special educational adviser for the World Congress of Churches, and on his return to Brazil (1979) was made secretary of education for the city of São Paulo. His works include Pedagogy of The Oppressed (1970), Education for Critical Consciousness (1974), and Pedagogy of Hope (1994). He was awarded UNESCO's Peace Prize in 1987. |
