| Actress, born in Exmouth, Devon, SW England, UK. She studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, and after regular stage appearances she became known in the popular television series Upstairs, Downstairs (1971–3). Later series include Forever Green (1989–91), with actor husband John Alderton (married 1969), and The Ambassador (1998). Her film credits include Shirley Valentine (1989), for which she received a best actress Oscar nomination, City of Joy (1992), and Paradise Road (1997). |
