biography: Sculptor, born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. In Paris (1874) he attended the École des Beaux-Arts (1879), worked with Emmanuel Fremiet, and made Paris his home. Specializing in the sculpting of animal figures, he is known for the patina on his bronze sculptures, as in ‘The Bear Tamer’ (1887), and for the equestrian statue of Lafayette (1899–1908).
