| Dutch socialist politician, born in Den Helder, W Netherlands. Formerly a dock worker in Rotterdam, in 1985 he became union leader in the transport union FNV (Federatie Nederlandse Vakverenigingen), where he gained a reputation as a strike leader in the port of Rotterdam. Since 1989 he has been MP for the new political party Groen-Links, made up of Politieke Partij Radikalen (PPR), Pacifistisch-Socialistische Partij (PSP), and Communistische Partij Nederland (CPN), and has led Groen-Links since 1994. |
