| biography:
| Philosopher, born in Messkirch, SW Germany. He became professor of philosophy at Marburg (1923–8) and Freiburg (1929–45), when he was retired for his connections with the Nazi regime. In his incomplete main work, Sein und Zeit (1927, Being and Time), he presents an exhaustive ontological classification of ‘being’, through the synthesis of the modes of human existence. He disclaimed the title of Existentialist, since he was not only concerned with personal existence and ethical choices but primarily with the ontological problem in general. Nevertheless, he was a key influence in Sartre's Existentialism. |
