| French statesman and prime minister (1940), born in Barcelonnette, SE France. Originally a barrister, he held many French government posts, and was premier (Apr to Jun) during the fall of France in 1940. He resigned rather than agree to an armistice with Germany, and was imprisoned by the Germans for the duration of World War 2. Afterwards he re-entered politics until losing his seat in 1962, and was a delegate to the Council of Europe (1949). |
