| Engineer and inventor, born in Lauenburg, N Germany. One of the pioneers of television, he invented in 1884 the Nipkow disc, a mechanical scanning device consisting of a revolving disc with a spiral pattern of apertures. In use until 1932, it was superseded by electronic scanning. |
