| Chemist, born in Thury-Harcourt, NW France. He studied at the Ecole des Mines, Paris. Working independently of Charles M Hall of the USA he discovered the electrolytic process for the production of aluminium in 1886. He also devised an electric-arc furnace which is widely used in the manufacture of steel. |
