| Classicist, born in Taunton, Massachusetts, USA. He was educated at Harvard (1934 BA; 1937 MA; 1938 PhD) and taught at the University of Wisconsin (1946–84). He became widely known for a series of books that were popular introductions to the archaeology of specific regions, and include The Mute Stones Speak (1960), The Greek Stones Speak (1962), Roman France (1972), The Dacian Stones Speak (1975), and The North African Stones Speak (1980). |
