| Composer, born in Hanau, WC Germany. He studied at Frankfurt, then played violin in the Rebner Quartet and the Opera Orchestra (1915–23), which he often conducted. His works include operas, concertos, and a wide range of instrumental pieces. He also pioneered Gebrauchsmusik, pieces written with specific aims, such as for newsreels and community singing. His music was banned by the Nazis in 1934, and he moved to Turkey, the UK, and the USA. In 1941 he was appointed professor at Yale and in 1953 at Zürich. |
