| biography:
| Chemist, born in Olten, N Switzerland. As research chemist for the J R Geigy company, in 1939 he synthesized DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and demonstrated its insecticidal properties. He received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1948, but use of DDT has now been discontinued (and banned) in many countries. |
