| Belgian statesman and prime minister (1938–9, 1946, 1947–9), born in Schaerbeek, C Belgium. He became the first Socialist premier of his country, and foreign minister with the government-in-exile during World War 2, and in 1946 president of the first General Assembly of the United Nations. After his later periods as premier, he was again foreign minister (1954–7, 1961–8), in which role he became one of the founding fathers of the EEC, and secretary-general of NATO (1957–61). |
