| Essayist, born in Noordpeene, N France. A Normalien et Docteur ès Lettres, he taught at the College de France and the Sorbonne. He published critical studies on Leopardi (1913), Lamartine (1925), Stendhal (1927), a translation of Michelangelo (1929), and a two-volume Histoire de la Littérature Française, with Joseph Bédier. He was elected a member of the Académie Française. |
