| biography:
| Physicist, born in Wessington, South Dakota, USA. He taught physics in Hangchow, China (1916–18), served in World War 1, then became a professor at the University of Hawaii (1923–31). He joined Stanford (1931–60), where he developed X-ray optical instruments, invented the X-ray microscope, and was a pioneer in holography. A dedicated supporter of students' rights to education, he remained active at Stanford after his retirement. |
