| Industrialist and government official, born in New York City, New York, USA. Starting as a salesman at Studebaker (1910), he led that company out of bankruptcy in 1935. An economic adviser to President Roosevelt, he later administered the Marshall Plan (1948–50) to speed economic recovery in Europe after World War 2. He also led the Ford Foundation (1951–3) and the United Nations Development Programme (1966–72). |
