| biography:
| Footballer, born in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, NE England, UK. He was an apprentice footballer with Newcastle United before turning professional in 1985. After Tottenham Hotspur signed him in 1988, he established himself as an outstanding player and a flamboyant personality, becoming a member of the England team, and had won 57 caps by the end of his international career. His goal scoring success helped Tottenham reach the 1991 FA Cup Final against Nottingham Forest. During the game he sustained a serious knee injury which seemed to threaten his agreed transfer deal to a top Italian club, Lazio, for a record £5 million fee. After a long recovery he moved to Lazio in time for the 1992–3 season, where he continued to be a controversial figure on and off the field. He received a further serious leg injury in 1994, and moved to Rangers from Lazio in 1995. In 1998 he joined Middlesbrough, but was out of the game again in early 2000, after breaking his arm. He joined Everton in 2000 and Burnley in 2002. |
