| biography:
| Writer, born in Elbingerode, C Germany. The son of a miner, he became a journalist and playwright. His play Lumpenbagasch (1898) shows his affiliation to Naturalism although, after a brief phase of neo-Romanticism, he later became a Neoclassicist, expounding his literary theories in a series of essays, including Der Weg zum Form (1906) and Der Zusammenbruch der Dichtung (1919). In later life he wrote popular light novels, such as Der Schatz im Morgenbrotstal (1926) and Das Glück von Lauthenthal (1933). His mediaeval saga Das Kaiserbuch (1922–8) was less successful than his other works. |
