| Chemist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied at Stockholm University, then joined the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany. In 1970 he was among the first to draw attention to the vulnerability of the ozone layer, and demonstrated that the presence of nitrogen oxides increase the rate of ozone's decomposition. He shared the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Mario Molina and Sherwood Rowland. |
