| biography:
| Biochemist, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He performed research in Copenhagen (1939–40), returned to the USA for a fellowship at the Rockefeller Institute (1941–2), then joined Harvard (1942–79) in association with the Massachusetts General Hospital (1956–79). He won international acclaim for his research in protein synthesis, nucleic acid metabolism, and oncogenic (cancer-causing) RNA viruses. In 1979 he became principal scientist at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Massachusetts. |
