| biography:
| Composer, born in Nantes, W France. His first opera Gilles de Retz, from a booklet by his mother, was played in Nantes in 1893. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1895 with Fauré and Gédalge, but returned to Brittany after his failure in the Concours du Prix de Rome. He wrote sacred chamber music and pieces for orchestra whose poetic colour was admired by Debussy. His music reflects the Breton atmosphere, as in Variation sur des airs de Biniou, Suite Bretonne, the ballet La Prêtresse de Korydwen (1926), and stage music for Tristan et Iseult (1920). |
