| Educator and composer, born in Anchorage, Kentucky, USA. Director of the Louisville Training School for Kindergarten and Primary Teachers (1893–1905), she wrote songs for children, one of which became ‘Happy Birthday to You’. Joining the Teachers College faculty of Columbia University (1905–35), she initiated curriculum reform, stressing the value of less structured classroom activities and of children's ability to learn through play. |
