| biography:
| Writer, educationist, and nationalist, born in Dublin, Ireland. He wrote poems, short stories, and plays in English and Irish. A leader of the Gaelic revival, he joined the Gaelic League in 1895, became editor of its journal, and lectured in Irish at University College. In 1915 he joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and in the 1916 Easter Rising was commander-in-chief of the insurgents, and proclaimed president of the provisional government. After the revolt had been quelled he was arrested, court-martialled, and shot, along with his brother William. |
