| biography:
| Philosopher and educator, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. After serving in the US Army Reserves (1942–6) and earning a doctorate in philosophy from Columbia University (1950), he joined the Stanford University faculty. In 1959 he became director of Stanford's Institute for Mathematical Studies in the Social Sciences. As president of the American Educational Research Association (1973–4), he was a pioneer in computer-assisted instruction and contributed to logic and probability theory. |
