| Soldier, born in Lucan, Co Dublin, E Ireland. He joined the English Life Guards, and in 1685 fought against Monmouth at Sedgemoor. In 1688 he was defeated at Wincanton, and crossed over to Ireland. Created Earl of Lucan by James II (his title was recognized only by the Jacobites), he drove the English out of Sligo, and was present at the Boyne (1690) and Aughrim (1691). He defended Limerick, and on its capitulation in 1691 left Ireland under amnesty and entered the French service in the Irish Brigade. He fought at Steenkirk (1692), and was mortally wounded at Neerwinden. |
