| Judge and US senator, born in Reno, Nevada, USA. A prominent lawyer and judge, he was elected to the US Senate (Democrat, Nevada, 1933–54). A conservative opponent of the New Deal, he won fame in the McCarthy era as an outspoken anti-Communist, sponsoring the Internal Security Act of 1950 and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. |
