| Italian politician and historian, born in Naples, Campania, SW Italy. A well-known liberal, he was forced to leave Naples after the failure of the 1848 risings. He moved to Florence and wrote several books on history and the Southern question, including Lettere meridionali (1878) and Studi sull'emigrazione (1909). Twice a deputy in the Italian parliament (1870–6, 1880–2), he was a senator from 1884, and also served as education minister (1891–2). |
