| biography:
| Italian politician and jurist, born in Castel Baronia, Campania, SW Italy. A law lecturer at Naples University, he went into exile after the 1848 risings and became a deputy of the Piedmontese, and then Italian, parliament. In 1862–85 he served as education, justice, and foreign affairs minister. He concluded the Triple Alliance Treaty in 1882 and was responsible for the decision to occupy Massaua. |
