| Spanish composer. He is famous for his opera Marina (1871), a new version of the lyrical drama of the same name which had a greatly successful premiere in 1855. Among his other works were an earlier opera (Ildegonda, performed for the first time in 1846), zarzuelas (Spanish operettas), cantatas, and religious music. In 1868 he was elected director of the Madrid Conservatory. |
