| biography:
| Suffrage leader, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She studied at Radcliffe College, joined the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, and became co-founder of the Boston Equal Suffrage Association for Good Government. With Inez Gillmore she founded the College Equal Suffrage League (from 1901), aiming to involve young women in the fight for equality. An efficient, strong-minded campaigner, she helped to bring about the Nineteenth Amendment (1920), thus securing the vote for women. She became first president of the League of Women Voters (1920–4), and shortly afterwards head of the Women's Joint Congressional Committee. |
