| Violinist and composer, born in Pamplona, N Spain. He gave his first performance at the age of eight, and later studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he was a star pupil. In 1859 he began to give concert tours, which brought him world fame. One of the greatest violinists of his day, many prominent composers wrote pieces for him. |
