| Mathematician, born in Oslo, Norway. He emigrated to the USA (1927) to teach at Yale (1927–68) where he was department chairman (1936–45). Decorated Knight, Order of St Olav (1947) for Norwegian relief work, he was co-editor of Gesammelte Werke of R Dedekind and wrote several books on number theory and many articles. |
