| German naval officer and explorer, born in Tallin, Estonia, the son of August von Kotzebue. He accompanied Russian admiral Baron Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770–1846) in the first voyage round the world to be made by Russians (1803–6). He also led an expedition via Cape Horn and Oceania to the Alaskan coast, tried to find a passage across the Arctic Ocean, and discovered Kotzebue Sound near Bering Strait (1815–18). He later commanded another round-the-world voyage (1823–6). |
