| biography:
| West German ex-security chief, the defendant in a major post-war treason case. In 1944 he was part of the plot against Hitler, after which he escaped to Britain. In 1950 he was appointed to the West German Office for the protection of the constitution. In 1954 he mysteriously disappeared from West Berlin, and later broadcast for the East German Communists. In 1956 he returned to the West, was arrested, tried, and imprisoned. His defence was that he had been drugged, driven to the Communist sector, held prisoner, and forced to make broadcasts until he managed to escape. Released in 1958, he continued to protest his innocence. |
