| biography:
| Holy Roman Emperor, the son of Henry of Bavaria and Mathilde of England. He was opposed to the Guelph Philip of Swabia, but became king in 1208, and was crowned emperor by Innocent III the next year. But his claim to the Sicilian throne had him excommunicated and deposed (1210), and Frederick of Swabia was elected King of the Romans in 1211. |
